Clay Scherer has been immersed in the thoroughbred industry his entire life. Born into a family where horse racing is in their blood - his father, retired trainer Merrill Scherer, and his mother, racing official Sue Brewster- Clay's path seemed destined from the start. After graduating from the University of Kentucky with a degree in economics, Clay launched his career with John Sikura's Hill 'n' Dale Farm. Working closely with Donato Lanni, he honed his ability to identify and acquire top-quality racehorses. Gaining valuable knowledge from industry leading experts, Clay was able to begin his career as an individual agent.
“I would describe it as grad school for horses”, says Scherer, when asked about his time at Hill 'n' Dale. “You would have to not be paying attention to not learn something”. Among his duties were sales recruitment and managing a consignment that went on to sell over $100m worth of bloodstock while Clay was there. That knowledge led him to find such runners as Shedaresthedevil, Interstatedaydream, Key of Life, and a plethora more of stakes winning horses around the country. Clay's work has benefited from strong industry connections, and he often will collaborate with top trainers, owners, and breeders. These relationships, combined with expertise, have allowed him to make acquisitions that align with his client's goals in the competitive world of thoroughbred racing.
